Obligation, Prohibition, and Suggestion

Di postingan kali ini, kita akan membahas mengenai penggunaan modal verb MUST untuk menyatakan obligation (keharusan/kewajiban), penggunaan modal verb MUST NOT untuk menyatakan prohibition (Larangan), dan penggunaan modal verb SHOULD untuk menyatakan saran.

 

A.      Expressing Obligation (Keharusan/kewajiban)

·      Modal verb MUST digunakan untuk mengatakan sesuatu yang harus/wajib untuk dilakukan.

·      Pattern/Pola:

S + Must + Verb 1

S + Must + Be + Adv/Noun/Adj

·      Contoh:

- You must wear school uniform.

- I must obey the rule. (Aku harus mentaati peraturan)

- I must be at school now.( Aku harus di sekolah sekarang)

 

B.      Expressing Prohibition (Larangan)

Ada 3 pola yang bisa digunakan untuk menyatakan larangan:

1.    S + MUST NOT + verb 1

Contoh:

- You must not eat the meat.

- You must not cross the street when the traffic light is red.

Jika tidak ada V1.nya maka gunakan rumus:  S + MUST NOT + be +Adj/Adv

Ex:

He must not be here

 

2.    Do not/Don’t + Verb 1

Contoh:

- Don’t cry! (Jangan menangis)

- Don’t come late! (Jangan datang terlambat)

- Don’t step in the grass! (Jangan menginjak rumput)

Jika  tidak terdapat V1, maka gunakan rumus berikut;

Don’t + be + Adjective/Noun/Adverb

Contoh:

- Don’t be late! (Jangan terlambat)

- Don’t be sad! (Jangan sedih)

- Don’t be lazy! (Jangan malas)

 

3.    No + Verb Ing

Contoh:

- No smoking! (Dilarang/Jangan merokok)

- No Climbing!(Dilarang memanjat)

- No Parking!(Dilarang parkir)

 

C.      Should

·      Modal verb should digunakan untuk mengungkapkan saran. Saran (suggestion) tidak sama dengan obligation (keharusan/kewajiban). Yang namanya saran, boleh dilakukan boleh juga tidak.

·      Pola/pattern:

S + should + verb 1  (menyatakan saran untuk melakukan sesuatu)

S + shoudn’t +verb 1 (menyarankan untuk tidak melakukan sesuatu)

Should+ Should+S+Verb1    (menanyakan/meminta saran)

·      Contoh:

- You shoud eat now. (Kamu seharusnya makan)

- You should’t sit there.(Kamu tidak seharusnya duduk di sana)

- Should I go home. (Apakah seharusnya aku pulang?)
